When one Googles “Montreal marketing copywriter”, one might expect, perhaps naively, to be directed to the website of, well, a Montreal marketing copywriter. Instead, the first page of search results, sponsored ads notwithstanding, yields links to 7 job boards such as Glassdoor and LinkedIn, and one savvy SEO agency. The clever freelancers and agencies who have sprung for sponsored ads are front and centre, and more power to them. Page 2 is no better. Only on page 3 do things start to look up, with 3 of the 10 SERPs constituting actual copywriters. (Having just launched my own website a couple of weeks ago, I don't to expect to rank for the term "Montreal marketing copywriter" just yet - that is, not until this cheeky blogpost hits the web.)
As one such Montreal marketing copywriter, I’m bemused by the fact that potential clients are forced to work so hard to connect with one of us. While I’m encouraged by the sheer volume of job sites seeking copywriters, especially as chatbots looming large over our profession, I hope those looking to work with a human copywriter can actually find one!
While I'm slightly indignant at the necessity of mastering SEO in today's digital landscape, I recognize that, in the immortal words of Genesis in their 1986 classic "Land of Confusion", "this is the world we live in, and these are the hands we're given." On that note, I will embrace a growth mindset and continue investing time in learning and implementing effective SEO strategies.
