One of these albums, all of which saw the light of day in 2024, may well have been playing while I worked on your project... mixed in with the copious quantities of old music I still love. While there were undoubtedly other fantastic albums made last year, these are the ones that found their way into my peripheral vision. More than ever, it feels appropriate than ever to seek out, celebrate, and, if you can, support art made locally. Many of these acts are touring right now!
Avec pas d'casque - Cardinal
Poetic, polished folk. My favourite album of the year.
Montreal
Sahra Halgan - Hiddo Dhawr
Frenetic, fuzzy garage rock with Somali flavour. This impressive woman opened the first music venue in her country's capital!
Somaliland
Sahra Halgan - Hiddo Dhawr Shaina Hayes - Kindergarten Heart
Sweet, soothing folk. A breath of fresh air in a harsh world.
Gaspésie, QC
LiKouri - ZIYA
Warm vocals, accordion, oboe, and a plethora of other lush and comforting sounds.
Montreal
Calamine - Décroissance Personnelle
Groovy feminist, anti-capitalist rap. Includes a whole song about my favourite beverage! Parental discretion advised.
Montreal
Rosa Pistola - Mi Cordillera (feat. DJ Chekesito)
Infectious dance/reggaeton that appears to pay homage, through each track, to a different South American nation.
Colombia/Mexico
Ibibio Sound Machine - Pull The Rope
Smart, uplifting Afrobeat.
UK
Michael Kiwanuka - Small Changes
Smooth and highly satisfying indie groove.
UK
Faux Real - Faux Ever
Strange and surreal art-pop, but with melodies and lyrics clearly recognizable as such.
France/USA
Lemon Twigs - A Dream Is All We Know
Earnest, harmonious pop-rock courtesy of two brothers who are as nostalgic for the 70s as I am.
Long Island
Oonga - Cracher le Feu
Fun, genre-bending, eclectic music; perfect for an impromptu party.
Montreal
Magdalena Bay - Imaginal Disk
Dreamy alt synth pop with a certain je-ne-sais-quoi.
Miami/LA
Mdou Moctar - Funeral for Justice
Purposeful guitar genius from the desert.
Nigeria
Father John Misty - Mahasmashana
Soaring, absorbing pop/rock by which to contemplate the vastness of the universe.
USA
Klô Pelgag - Abracadabra
Synth-driven pop with heart.
Montreal
Willie Nelson - Last Leaf on the Tree
It's Willie Nelson. Injecting even more poignancy into the Flaming Lips' 'Do You Realize?' Not suitable for dinner parties.
USA
I'm grateful to these and all artists with the courage to share their work with the world.
